Resort guide for Bareges (Click on the arrows)

Bareges

The largest ski resort in the French Pyrenees. Relatively unknown by the British, but the French and Spanish have been coming here for years to enjoy the lack of crowds, the huge range of pistes, and the almost limitless off-piste and ski-touring opportunities.

The resort has kilometres of well-groomed piste set in beautiful unspoiled scenery, for a fraction of the cost of similar resorts in the Alps.

The Pyrenees  generally receive more snow annually than the Alps due to their position near the Atlantic coast. The weather conditions are also ideal – stable high pressure systems bring clear blue skies, interspersed with heavy snowstorms to refresh the slopes. This leads to a long season lasting from the end of November to mid-April.

We like

  • Crowd free
  • Unspoilt scenery
  • Huge selection of runs for beginners and intermediates
  • Cheaper than the Alps
  • Amazing off-piste and ski-touring opportunities

We don't like

  • The selection of black runs may be limiting for advanced skiers
  • English is not widely spoken in the resort

Location

Bareges-La Mongie is located in the Haute Pyrenees department of France, a few miles south of Lourdes. It is accessible from the airports of Lourdes, Pau and Toulouse, and Lourdes railway station can be reached from just about anywhere in France, including a direct service from Paris.

The resort spans the mountain range between the traditional French village of Bareges, and the ski-resort town of La Mongie. It includes the world famous Pic du Midi observatory, and the Col du Tourmalet, scene of many a tour de France finish.

For those that just can't get enough, the neighbouring resorts of Gavarnie-Gedre, Luz Ardiden and Cauterets are all available within an hour's drive.

On the slopes

Bareges-La Mongie offers crowd-free skiing for all levels. From gentle green runs through native Pyrenean forest to seriously technical black runs, and the legendary off-piste run from the Pic du midi observatory.

The resort has invested heavily in snow cannons, ensuring that the vast majority of the resort is open, and ice free, for the entire season.

Lift infrastructure is good, with all ski areas accessible via 4 and 6 man chair lifts.

Mountain restaurants are plentiful, with several run by local farmers selling filling and tasty Pyrenean specialities.

Local tips

If you want a typical ski-resort stay, then opt for a hotel in La Mongie. If you would like to experience a bit of traditional mountain village life then opt for a hotel or catered chalet in the village of Bareges.

There is a weekly Ryanair flight from London Stanstead to Lourdes on Saturday mornings.
